Louis Redstone
1903, Russia
American Architect, Author, and Artist, Louis Redstone was one of Michigan's more prominent Modernist architects. He left a network of buildings in his wake: banks, bowling alleys, restaurants, schools, synagogues. He made significant contributions to southeast Michigan's early suburban shopping centers, notably Somerset Mall and Westland Shopping Center. Other well-known buildings he designed are Northwestern High School, Manufacturers (Comerica) Bank Building, 333 W. Fort Street Office Building, B’Nai David Synagogue, and Grand Traverse Resort.
Near 7 Mile, in Greenwich Park, he designed and built three homes in the International Style. These homes are now registered as The Louis G Redstone Residential Historic District. Redstone's architectural work is characterized by the integration of art with architecture. He created a total artistic design experience and published books on the topic.
Born in Russia in 1903, he immigrated to Detroit in 1923 and graduated from the University of Michigan School of Architecture in 1929. With America on the verge of the Great Depression, he moved to British-controlled Palestine to put his new degree to use. He worked helping to rebuild Jewish settlements and then began work as a stone mason. Once America was on a better footing, he returned to Detroit and opened his architecture firm, Redstone Architects Inc. in 1939. The firm still operates today, where his son, Daniel Redstone, is Principal-In-Charge.
